TGT Meets...Sharon Ellis-Gillard from SAFEmpowerment

In this edition of TGT Meets, we sit down with Sharon Ellis-Gillard, the powerhouse founder and director of SAFEmpowerment.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us what inspired the start of SAFEmpowerment?

Hi my name is Sharon and I started Safempowerment when I retired from Dorset Police. I felt that we needed to talk to young people about healthy relationships, domestic abuse and warning signs.

What is SAFEmpowerment’s core mission—and why is this work so critical right now?

Our mission is to educate young people on what a healthy relationship looks like. We are also looking to educate young people who are on the edge of the criminal justice system or vulnerable to exploitation.

There is a distant lack of charities that work with vulnerable young people. We know what its like to be on the front line of city’s and towns late at night.. we have the experience and the knowledge to work with these young people.

Are you seeking new funding, volunteers, or partnerships right now?

As a small charity we are always looking for funding and partnerships. This would enable us to work with many more vulnerable people. We are very lucky to have an army of volunteers.

How can communities, businesses, or individuals best support SAFEmpowerment right now?

Donations, grants and partnerships would be AMAZING for us. We spent a lot of time applying for grants and often don’t receive a reply. All donations go back in to the charity and allow us to work with ore young people.

What would you most like people to remember after learning about SAFEmpowerment?

The difference we make!!! The reviews we receive from the children themselves are incredible, humbling and, are what keeps us doing this role. Keeping a young person safe and changing their mindset to allow them to live a healthy life is the EXACT reason why we are here!!

SAFEmpowerment

Originally, SAFEmpowerment focused on domestic abuse and healthy relationships, a topic they continue to address with young people because they believe it's incredibly important. However, they've grown beyond that!
