ActionCOACH Dorset Announces Charity Partnerships to Champion Enterprise and Mental Wellbeing

There is a conversation happening across Dorset’s business community that goes well beyond strategy and growth. It is a conversation about confidence, pressure, resilience and what it really takes to sustain both a business and the person running it.

ActionCOACH Dorset is bringing that conversation into focus with the announcement of formal partnerships with three organisations this spring:

•       YESS Foundation-UK

•       Dorset Mind

•       Dorset Nightstop

Each partnership reflects a shared conviction: that practical business knowledge, mental wellbeing and a stable foundation are not separate concerns. They are deeply connected - and all three matter, whether someone is a young person encountering enterprise for the first time or an experienced owner navigating the realities of growth.

Opening the Knowledge Gate on Enterprise

The most active strand of the initiative is already under way through YESS Foundation-UK.

YESS delivers free business and life skills training to young people aged 12 to 22, helping them understand what self-employment and enterprise genuinely look like - not the polished version, but the honest one. Through practical sessions, real-world examples and open discussion, the programme aims to demystify entrepreneurship and make it feel genuinely achievable.

The ActionCOACH UK team is already delivering outreach sessions across schools, colleges and youth organisations in the county, covering:

•       The realities of starting and running a small business

•       The role mindset and resilience play in everyday success

•       Honest insights from local business owners, including the lessons learned the hard way

By combining enterprise education with conversations about wellbeing and expectations, the programme aims to equip young people with both practical skills and the confidence to use them.

Entrepreneurship and Wellbeing: A Connected Conversation

ActionCOACH Dorset works daily with business owners across the county on growth planning, leadership and long-term strategy. Increasingly, those conversations also include stress, burnout, self-doubt and mental health.

The developing partnership with Dorset Mind acknowledges what many business owners already know: that performance cannot be separated from personal resilience. Dorset Mind provides early intervention, counselling, mentoring and support groups for individuals experiencing mental health challenges across the county, with a growing focus on children and young people.

As the partnership develops, the shared aim is to strengthen awareness of mental wellbeing within the entrepreneurial community - encouraging business owners to be as intentional about their own health as they are about their balance sheet.

Supporting Stability and Opportunity

The third partnership, with Dorset Nightstop, extends the initiative’s reach to young people facing housing insecurity.

Dorset Nightstop provides emergency, same-night accommodation for 16 to 25 year olds at risk of homelessness, placing them with trained volunteer hosts while longer-term solutions are found. It is foundational work: without safety and stability, conversations about education, employment and enterprise cannot begin.

This partnership is at an early stage, and ActionCOACH Dorset is committed to supporting the organisation’s mission as the relationship grows.

Together, the three partnerships form a coherent framework - promoting opportunity, strengthening resilience and offering practical support at the points where it is most needed.

A Commitment to Dorset’s Business Community

Duncan McKechnie at ActionCOACH Dorset, said:

“We see every day how closely entrepreneurship and mental wellbeing are connected. Business ownership can be genuinely empowering - but it also brings real pressure, uncertainty and moments of self-doubt that rarely make it into the headline version of success. These partnerships allow us to support the whole journey: from young people exploring what enterprise might mean for them, to experienced owners who want to build resilience alongside revenue. We are at the beginning of something we believe matters, and we are looking for more people across Dorset who want to be part of it.”

As the initiative develops, the team welcomes conversations with schools, youth organisations, business owners and community groups across Dorset who would like to be involved in future workshops, mentoring or collaborative events.

ActionCOACH Dorset MD Simon Ellson said:

“These partnerships were not something we planned on a spreadsheet. They grew from conversations - with clients, with young people, with people doing quiet, important work in our community. YESS is already in rooms across Dorset, and that energy is real. Mind and Nightstop are at an earlier stage, and I want to be honest about that. Building the right relationships takes time, and I would rather do this properly than make promises ahead of substance. What I can say is that the direction is clear: business coaching does not stop at the balance sheet, and it never should.”
