Construction to begin on major Boscombe regeneration project

Boscombe’s biggest regeneration project yet moves into construction in June – bringing a new community centre, 68 council-owned homes and space for wellbeing and health centre another step closer for local people.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council’s Hawkwood Road regeneration project will transform a nine-hectare site into a new neighbourhood with homes, community space and local services - creating better places to live, meet and spend time.

The development will also help people who need a stable home stay in the area, helping ease pressure on the housing register and making it easier for families to find the right home.

Phase one of construction of the project is focused on building the new community centre and pedestrian link between Christchurch Road and Hawkwood Road. Work will start in June 2026 with completion due in August 2027.

This phase of the project will cost around £4.1 million and is being funded by the UK Government through the Towns Fund for Boscombe

To facilitate the delivery of the project, including construction of 68 much-needed council-owned homes, changes to Hawkwood Road car park will be introduced in phases:

·         Partial closure from 29 May, affecting a small section of the western end of the site (approximately 50 spaces).

·         Full closure from 24 July, ahead of the main construction starting in August.

The development has a two-phased delivery, with full completion expected by August 2028. Once finished, it will provide:

·         68 high-quality council-owned homes for social rent, helping more people stay in the area

·         New community hub and commercial space, with opportunities for commercial

·         Dedicated space for a community wellbeing and health centre

·         Four retail kiosks located in the new pedestrian link between Christchurch Road and Hawkwood Road

·         Greener public spaces and better-connected streets that are easier to enjoy

·         A more vibrant, welcoming neighbourhood that supports residents and local businesses

Councillor Kieron Wilson, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Regulatory Services for BCP Council, said:

“This is a really exciting milestone for Boscombe. We’re starting to turn plans into something people can actually see and feel in their everyday lives.

“These works are a key step towards building the homes people need, along with better public spaces and facilities for the community.

“We want to create a neighbourhood that people feel proud of – somewhere that works better for residents now and for the future.”
