Taking place from November 25 to 30, 2027, the six-day MYTIME Sahara Challenge is a fully supported, professionally guided trek covering approximately 40–50km through the Moroccan Sahara, across sand dunes, ancient dried-up riverbeds and rocky desert landscapes.
Anyone interested in taking part can learn more at a free information evening on Monday, October 5, at 6.30pm, held at MYTIME Young Carers' Broadstone office and online via Zoom. There is no commitment to sign up, and anyone who would like to find out more is welcome to attend.
It promises to be an unforgettable adventure, but the reason behind the challenge is much closer to home.
Across the UK, children and young people help to care for family members affected by illness, disability, mental health difficulties or addiction. Their responsibilities can include completing household tasks, providing emotional support, managing medication or looking after younger siblings.
Many young carers manage these responsibilities quietly while also handling school, friendships and the usual challenges of growing up. Some do not realise they are young carers and, without the right support, their caring role can affect their education, wellbeing, confidence and future opportunities.
MYTIME Young Carers works to ensure these children and young people are identified, recognised and given access to the support, friendship and opportunities every child deserves.
Working with young carers, families, schools and communities, the Dorset-based charity provides a break from caring responsibilities with memorable experiences, helps schools identify and support young carers and creates opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop leadership skills and prepare for employment.
The charity has grown from supporting approximately 75 young carers to reaching around 3,000 each year. However, many more children are believed to have caring responsibilities, making continued fundraising vital.
Krista Cartlidge, CEO of MYTIME Young Carers, said: “The Sahara Trek is an extraordinary challenge, but it has a very important purpose. Young carers face daily challenges that most people never see. They can carry a level of responsibility that would be difficult for many adults, while still trying to keep up with school and enjoy their childhood.
“By joining this trek, people will not only be taking on an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives; they will be helping us reach more young carers and make sure they receive the recognition, support and opportunities they deserve.”
MYTIME is particularly encouraging local businesses to get involved by either supporting an employee to participate or helping a trekker reach their fundraising target.
No previous trekking experience is required, although participants will need a good level of fitness, determination and a willingness to prepare. MYTIME will provide fundraising guidance, practical preparation and opportunities to meet fellow trekkers before departure.
