Lawson credits Cairns after impressive start with Pirates

Number one Richard Lawson gave credit to rising star Will Cairns after he got his Poole Pirates career off to a sublime start.

The teenager, signed by the club over the winter, turned 16 last Sunday, making him eligible to ride in the SGB Championship.

He totalled 8+1 from his four rides in his first outing for Pirates, including two race wins in a 57-33 win over Glasgow.

And Lawson, who banged in a 15-point maximum on the night, hailed the youngster’s first appearance in the second tier of British Speedway.

He said: “We started the meeting really strongly and it was good to see it from everyone and hats off to Will.

“There was quite a lot of pressure and eyeballs on him and he has excelled so fair play to him and to everyone in the team.

“It was a good team effort and we've despatched Glasgow back to Scotland with their tails between their legs."

League leaders Poole’s next test comes with a trip to Workington on Saturday (3pm).
