Pirates see off Cheetahs to extend lead at the top

Richard Lawson once again led from the front for Poole Pirates as they earned their revenge on the Oxford Cheetahs at Wimborne Road.

The racer nicknamed ‘Rocketman’ totalled a 15-point maximum from five rides as Poole sealed a 48-42 victory, having lost to Oxford on home shale earlier in the campaign.

Lawson was ably supported by skipper Zach Cook (10+1) and Lewis Kerr (10) as Poole extended to nine points their lead at the top of the SGB Championship table.

Francis Gusts (12) shone at reserve for Oxford, earning himself a chance at heat 15 alongside Sam Masters (10) for the visitors.

But with Oxford needing a 5-1 to force a draw, Poole sealed a 4-2 of their own through Lawson and Cook to seal the spoils by six points.

Next up for Poole is a home clash against Plymouth Gladiators at Wimborne Road on Wednesday, August 6.
