5 Reasons Upwey Wishing Well is Dorset’s Hidden Gem

Looking for a day out that feels magical, memorable, and just a little bit mysterious? Tucked away in the quaint village of Upwey, just outside Weymouth, lies the Upwey Wishing Well; a place where history, beauty, and indulgence come together.

I live in Poole and made the 45-minute drive — and I can honestly say it was worth every mile. Here’s why:

1. A Wishing Well with Centuries of History

This isn’t just a pretty water feature — the Upwey Wishing Well is steeped in history, believed to date back hundreds of years. Once a vital water source for the village, it soon became shrouded in folklore, said to bring luck and grant wishes to those who tossed in a coin. Standing beside it today, with streams flowing through the gardens, you feel part of a tradition that has charmed visitors for generations.

2. Enchanting Water Gardens

Surrounding the well are stunning landscaped gardens, complete with bridges, flowing streams, and even ducklings paddling by. It’s the kind of setting that invites you to slow down, wander, and simply enjoy being in the moment. Every corner is picture-perfect, making it as much a treat for photographers as it is for families.

3. Afternoon Tea to Rival 5-Star Hotels

The tearoom has become famous for its High Tea, and for good reason. Think delicate sandwiches, savoury tarts, indulgent cakes, and the biggest scones you’ve ever seen — all served on tiered stands with fine china. There’s even a Children’s High Tea so little ones can join in the magic. Honestly, it’s as impressive (if not better) than some five-star hotels.  Read our review, here.

4. A Buzzing Yet Relaxed Atmosphere

Despite being tucked away in a quaint village, the tearoom was full when we arrived -  even at 3pm! Yet it never felt rushed or overwhelming. Instead, it’s buzzing with happy chatter while still keeping a calm, welcoming feel. Whether you dine inside or outside in the gardens, it’s the kind of place you could easily linger for hours.

5. More Than Just Tea — A Full Day Out

With free parking (donations welcome), the gardens to explore, and plenty of scenic walks nearby, a trip here can easily become a whole day’s adventure. It’s the perfect outing for families, couples, walkers, or anyone looking to escape into Dorset’s countryside for a while.

So, is Upwey Wishing Well still a hidden gem? Perhaps not for those in the Weymouth area, judging by how busy it was. But if you’re travelling from further afield, this tucked-away treasure is one of those rare spots that feels truly special — and well worth the journey.
