Historic Dorset Queen Returns to Poole Harbour in April

The Dorset Queen, a vintage motor yacht with a history dating back to 1938, will once again be welcoming passengers on board from April.

Built in the late 1930s, the Dorset Queen has lived several lives, including service during wartime and many years carrying passengers along the south coast.

Today, the vessel has been carefully restored and remains one of the few historic motor yachts still operating in the area, offering a different perspective on Poole Harbour and its surrounding coastline.

Its return each spring has become something of a seasonal marker locally, signalling the start of longer days and time spent by the water.

Spring Sailings Return to the Dorset Coast

With the new season underway, a series of sailings are scheduled to take place across April to October.

Among the early dates is the Wareham River Cruise on 5th April, which follows a quieter route from Poole Harbour along the River Frome into the historic town of Wareham. The journey offers a more relaxed way to explore the area, moving from open harbour into the surrounding countryside.

Later in the month, Afternoon High Tea cruises will also return, combining traditional afternoon tea with views across the harbour, including Brownsea Island and Sandbanks.

A range of other themed cruises are expected to run throughout the season, reflecting the continued popularity of on-the-water experiences across Dorset.

A Different Way to Experience the Harbour

While Poole Harbour is well known for its busy waterfront and coastal activity, experiences like this offer a slower way to take it in.

For many, the appeal lies in stepping away from the usual pace, spending time on the water and seeing familiar places from a different angle.

As Dorset moves into the spring and summer months, the return of harbour cruises adds to the growing list of ways to enjoy the county’s coastline.
