REVIEW: Fawlty Towers Live at The Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth
Fresh from a sold-out West End season, John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers: The Play has arrived at Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre and it’s every bit as hilarious and nostalgic as you’d hope!
Adapted by comedy legend John Cleese himself and directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, this brand-new stage production brings to life all the chaos, wit, and wonderfully awkward charm of the ‘Greatest British Sitcom of All Time’ (Radio Times).
The cast were absolutely outstanding; from Basil and Sybil to the bumbling Major and poor Manuel, each performance was spot on. It genuinely felt like stepping back in time and watching the real thing live. The set was incredible too; complete with the hotel reception, dining room, and even an upstairs bedroom - instantly transporting you to the world of Fawlty Towers the moment the curtain rose.
It was a laugh a minute from start to finish, packed with all the classic sketches we know and love. I was thrilled they included the legendary “Germans” scene (something I thought might be left out these days) and the audience absolutely erupted with laughter and applause when Basil exclaimed, “Don’t mention the war - I think I got away with it once!”
As always, The Pavilion Theatre provided the perfect setting. Despite a full house, it was smooth and well-organised with no queues for the bar or toilets, and pre-ordering interval drinks made everything effortless. I even managed to park right outside (though BCP parking can be pricey, so public transport may be worth considering) check out More Buses timetable here (they have buses running most of the night now).
If you fancy a night of pure comedy and nostalgia, Fawlty Towers Live is running at The Pavilion Theatre until Saturday 18th October. With an 18-strong cast, sharp writing, and endless laughter, this is one show you won’t want to miss.
Book your tickets now and relive the madness of Fawlty Towers - it’s a staycation you’ll never forget!
