Illuminate at The Blue Pool 2026 – A Magical Winter Light Trail Review

There’s something truly special about winter evenings in Dorset, and we took the family to the opening night of Illuminate at The Blue Pool - and it didn’t disappoint. This annual after-dark light trail returns each winter to transform one of Purbeck’s most enchanting natural spaces into a glowing world of colour, music and wonder.

From the moment we arrived, bundled up against the freezing stillness of a clear January night, the atmosphere felt magical. The woodland paths and lakeside trail were illuminated by vibrant, professionally designed light displays that shifted and danced as we wandered around the water’s edge.

One of the standout new features for 2026 this year is the lit-up rope bridge – a real highlight for both kids and adults. Walking across it under the glow of lights, with the lake shimmering below and, felt like a proper winter adventure. The trail also includes a magnificent light show, complete with atmospheric music that enhances the overall experience.

A Family-Friendly Experience for All Ages

We’ve visited Illuminate a few times now, and it’s always worth returning. Each year brings new features and fresh surprises that make the walk exciting even for repeat visitors. Whether you’re planning a family night out, a date evening, or an outing with friends, this is a winter event that genuinely suits all ages

What makes it extra enjoyable for families is the fantastic hot food offering in the café. On our visit we enjoyed: a venison sausage baguette, a warming three-bean chilli with hot crusty bread, macaroni cheese for this kids, toasted marshmallows by the open fires on the tearooms’ terrace for pudding.

The combination of hearty food, crackling fire pits, and a stunning light trail made the night feel truly memorable.
