Poole Museum Reopens After A £10m Transformation

After years of planning and a £10 million transformation, Poole Museum in Dorset has officially reopened as a vibrant, modern hub celebrating the town’s maritime heritage, creativity, and community spirit.

Spread across five floors, with the fifth floor to open soon, the museum guides visitors through the history and culture of Poole, from shipwrecks and pottery to people, art and plenty of storytelling.

What truly sets the new Poole Museum apart is its interactivity and inclusivity. With level access, new lifts, and digital storytelling throughout, it’s engaging for everyone, from curious children to lifelong history lovers.

Visitors can step into the world of Poole’s maritime past, admire the Iron Age logboat (a remarkable 10-metre-long find and the largest of its kind in Southern Britain), and explore immersive experiences that make history feel alive.

Watch our video: Take a look inside the museum, from dramatic shipwreck displays to the colour-filled creative studios and new exhibition spaces.

A Celebration of Poole’s Heritage and Creativity

The museum’s three historic listed buildings, Oakley’s Mill, Scaplen’s Court, and the medieval Town Cellars, have been carefully restored, creating more than double the previous public space. The result is both deeply historic and refreshingly modern, blending centuries of heritage with a fresh design.

Even the shop and gift area reflects this creative spirit, offering books, crafts, and locally inspired gifts that celebrate Poole’s artisans, artists, and history.

And best of all? Entry is completely free.
