REVIEW: Mapperton House Pippa and the Potion Room Trail & Activities

If you’re looking for a Halloween trail in Dorset with a magical twist, Mapperton House has created something truly special. The Pippa and the Potion Room Trail offers the perfect blend of spooky fun, creativity, and outdoor adventure; all set within the breathtaking historic grounds of Mapperton Estate, one of Dorset’s most picturesque locations.

A Halloween Trail with a Twist

From the moment we arrived, Mapperton House was beautifully decorated for Halloween, but what really stood out was the unique twist; instead of traditional scares, families were invited into an enchanting world of potions and spells!

The Potion Room was an absolute hit with the girls (please note it's on the right of the trail towards the 18th Century swimming pool), there's a teaser when you enter the gardens to the left but don't be dissapointed - that's just for looking at, at in the actual potion room the kids can get stuck in with creating their potions). They loved mixing ingredients, making their own “magic,” and getting hands-on in a fun, interactive way. It’s creative, sensory, and perfectly pitched for children.

Running Wild in Mapperton’s Magical Grounds

Once they’d finished in the Potion Room, the girls ran wild and free through the stunning Mapperton gardens, and honestly, we could have stayed there all day. It’s such a beautiful, safe space for kids to explore nature (in all the glorious autumn colours), spot wildlife, and enjoy some real countryside freedom.

The Beaver Play Area

A real highlight for younger children is the Beaver Play Area, inspired by Mapperton’s very own resident beavers, Woody and Twiggy. The kids really enjoyed imaginitive play in the Teepess, from building dams and digging in the sandpit and simply collecting the fallen leaves - pure fun out in nature!

Crafts, Coffee & Cake at the Mapperton Café

The Mapperton Café is excellent, not just for its delicious selection of snacks, light lunches, and homemade cakes, but for its thoughtful craft corner. The Halloween-themed craft area was a huge hit! The girls spent ages painting and creating spooky decorations while I enjoyed a well-earned coffee and delicious homemade quiche (the kids devoured their delicious homemade cakes including the fantastic 'Ghoul Cake'

How Long to Spend at Mapperton

We ended up staying for well over three hours, and could easily have made a day of it. Between the trail, potion-making, play area, café, and exploring the grounds, there’s so much to see and do for all ages.

Worth the Drive from Poole

We travelled from Poole, and the hour-long drive was absolutely worth it. Mapperton House offers something really different; a perfect family-friendly mix of Halloween fun, creativity, nature, and heritage. And at just £5 per child, it's an absolute bargain!
