Classy Cairns in the points as Pirates thump Redcar
Talented teenager Will Cairns helped power Poole Pirates to a dominant victory in their SGB Championship opener against Redcar - before seeing his own engine malfunction.
The 16-year-old totalled 11 points from four rides as he was only beaten once by a Bears rider all night at Wimborne Road.
Richard Lawson (11+1) and Zach Cook (9+3) also led the charge as the hosts recorded a dominant 54-36 success.
Only maximum man and former Pirate Nicolai Klindt (18) denied Cairns a full house. The youngster then saw his bike come to a standstill after taking the chequered flag in heat 14.
Cairns said: "I blew my engine in the last one, so if there is anyone out there who wants to sponsor me, then sponsorship enquiries are very much open!
“Hopefully the points I scored might just cover it and I might just break even, but it's like everyone in the speedway community says, the motors go best just before they blow and it proved that tonight.
“I didn't really change anything. I mean, I didn't do great last week and then tonight it's 11.
“I'm gutted though because I actually wanted a maximum. That is my goal for this season. I showed a bit of lack of experience in the race with Nicolai there but I gave him a run for his money.”
Pirates, who also announced this week Kyle Newman would remain with the side on a permanent basis, head to the ECCO Arena on Friday for the return fixture against Redcar (7.30pm).
