League leaders Poole hold their nerve to see off Comets

Richard Lawson once again led from the front as Poole Pirates sealed a 47-43 victory over Workington Comets at Wimborne Road.

The Poole number one totalled 13 points from his five rides as the Pirates extended to eight points their lead at the top of the SGB Championship.

In a tight meeting between the sides on the south coast, Lawson took a much-needed heat win in the finale, where a Comets 5-1 would have set up a super heat.

Lawson was ably backed up by Lewis Kerr (11) for the hosts. Youngster Will Cairns (6+3) also made a key contribution at reserve.

Fraser Bowes (13) and Jye Etheridge (12+2) starred for Workington, who picked up the aggregate bonus point.

Poole’s next test comes away at Redcar on Friday (7.30pm).
