Shire Hall Museum
Shire Hall Museum brings over 200 years of justice and injustice to life.
High W Street, Dorchester , Dorset, DT1 1UY
Website Email 01305 261849Like all towns, Dorchester has had petty crime over the years, from drunkenness and non-attendance at church in the sixteenth century to running a brothel and selling alcohol to soldiers in the twentieth century.
There was, however, another more serious aspect to Dorchester’s criminal past. As the county town it was the place where the Assizes were held. Where dramas, tragedies and even comedies were played out in the courts.
In the most tragic cases people forfeited their lives or were transported for life. In this walk we shall visit the sites of Dorchester’s prisons and places of punishment as well as hearing about some of the stories surrounding the town’s criminal history.
