Halloween at Moors Valley 2026: Our Family Review of Dorset's Magical After-Dark Adventure
Looking for the best Halloween events in Dorset this October half term? We've just returned from Halloween at Moors Valley Country Park, and WOW! From spectacular illuminated woodland and spooky surprises to incredible live actors, this is one Halloween experience we return to every single year. Here's why.
There are some events you look forward to every year, and for our family, Halloween at Moors Valley is right up there at the top of the list.
We've been visiting for years, and every October, the excitement starts building as we get ready to head back into the forest after dark.
This year, we decided to go all out with the Halloween costumes, taking our two daughters, aged six and nine, and their friend along for an evening of spooky fun.
And what an evening it was!
If you've visited Halloween at Moors Valley before, you might wonder whether it's worth returning.
Our answer? Absolutely!
One of the things we love most about this event is that it never feels exactly the same. Every year brings new additions, different surprises and fresh reasons to return.
And in 2026, the live actors really took the experience to another level.
Halloween at Moors Valley: What Can You Expect?
Located near Ringwood, on the Dorset and Hampshire border, Moors Valley Country Park is already one of our favourite places for a family day out.
But when Halloween arrives, the forest undergoes an extraordinary transformation.
Forget the woodland walks you know from daytime visits.
After dark, the trees become part of an immersive Halloween world, illuminated with spectacular colours, atmospheric lighting and spooky displays.
As you make your way through the forest, there's something new to discover around every corner.
One moment you're admiring the beautiful illuminations, the next you're encountering a mysterious character or stumbling upon another wonderfully creepy scene.
It's this combination of beautiful lighting, theatrical storytelling and unexpected encounters that makes Halloween at Moors Valley such a memorable experience.
And it's not just for children.
There's plenty for adults to enjoy too, particularly if you love Halloween, immersive experiences or simply doing something a little different on an autumn evening.
The Live Actors Absolutely Stole the Show!
Now, we've experienced some brilliant Halloween attractions over the years, but the live performances at Moors Valley really stood out during our 2026 visit.
The actors were fantastic!
Sweeney Todd – A Brilliantly Creepy Encounter
One of our absolute highlights was meeting Sweeney Todd.
With his atmospheric barber's chair, sinister surroundings and wonderfully theatrical performance, this was such a memorable part of the trail.
The attention to detail was brilliant, and the character interaction made it feel like we'd stepped straight into a spooky story.
It's one thing to walk past a Halloween display, but quite another to find yourself face-to-face with a character who brings the whole scene to life!
We loved it.
Dr Frankenstein Brings the Drama!
Another standout was Dr Frankenstein.
His eerie laboratory setting, theatrical performance and interaction with visitors made this one of the most entertaining encounters of the evening.
The girls were completely captivated.
It was such a brilliant example of how much live performers add to an illuminated trail.
Rather than simply looking at the displays, you're suddenly part of the experience.
Witches, Zombies and Surprises in the Forest
And the entertainment didn't stop there!
We encountered witches, zombies and other spooky characters as we explored the woodland.
You never quite knew what was waiting around the next corner.
The roaming characters were particularly effective because they added an element of surprise to the experience.
It made the whole evening feel much more immersive and exciting.
For us, the live actors were one of the biggest highlights of Halloween at Moors Valley 2026.
Their enthusiasm, interaction and performances really made the evening special.
A Spectacular Illuminated Halloween Trail Through the Forest
Of course, the illuminations themselves are another huge reason to visit.
There's something incredibly atmospheric about exploring a forest after dark, particularly when the trees are illuminated in dramatic reds, greens, blues and purples.
The lighting transforms familiar woodland into something almost unrecognisable.
Throughout the experience, we discovered spooky scenes, glowing pumpkins, skeletons, creepy woodland displays and plenty of opportunities to stop and take photographs.
Some sections felt magical, while others had a much spookier atmosphere.
That variety is part of what makes the trail so enjoyable.
The forest itself provides the perfect setting, and the combination of natural surroundings, lighting, sound and
Halloween installations creates an experience that's difficult to replicate anywhere else.
If you love photography or creating Halloween content, you'll be spoilt for choice!
Is Halloween at Moors Valley Suitable for Children?
We visited with three girls, including our daughters aged six and nine, and they had a fantastic time.
They were particularly excited about dressing up for the occasion, which made the evening feel even more special.
There was so much for them to look at, discover and talk about as we made our way around.
They loved the illuminated displays, the spooky characters and the interactive moments with the actors.
And, of course, there were plenty of giggles along the way!
One thing worth remembering is that this is an after-dark Halloween experience featuring spooky characters and theatrical scenes.
Some children will absolutely love that, while others may find certain moments a little frightening.
Every child is different, so I'd recommend considering how comfortable yours are with spooky entertainment before booking.
For our girls, it was a brilliant balance of excitement, surprises and Halloween fun.
And their verdict at the end?
They couldn't wait to tell us their favourite parts!
Why We Return to Halloween at Moors Valley Every Year
I think this is what really sets Moors Valley apart.
We've been returning to this event for years, and yet we never feel like we're simply repeating the same experience.
There are always changes, additions and new things to discover.
That matters because, as a family, we love having traditions, but we also want experiences that continue to surprise us.
Moors Valley manages to deliver both.
There's the familiar excitement of heading into the forest after dark, combined with the anticipation of discovering what's different this year.
And in 2026, the live performances added another dimension that we particularly enjoyed.
It's clear that a huge amount of creativity and effort goes into bringing the experience to life.
From the atmospheric lighting and detailed installations to the actors interacting with visitors, the whole event feels like a proper Halloween adventure rather than simply a walk through an illuminated forest.
That's why we keep coming back.
Dressing Up for Halloween at Moors Valley
If you're visiting with children, I'd definitely recommend getting into the Halloween spirit and dressing up!
We all wore fancy dress this year, and it added another layer of fun to the evening.
The girls absolutely loved it.
There are so many fantastic photo opportunities along the trail, particularly with the illuminated forest and theatrical Halloween scenes as your backdrop.
Just remember that you'll be outdoors in late October, so make sure costumes are warm enough or can be worn with extra layers.
Comfortable footwear is also a must.
Halloween Food and Treats
No Halloween family adventure would be complete without something to eat!
We enjoyed stopping for food during our visit, and the Halloween-themed menu added to the atmosphere.
After exploring the forest, it was lovely to enjoy a bite to eat and chat about our favourite moments.
And with children, I'd always recommend allowing a little extra time for food, photographs and those inevitable requests to stop and look at something!
