Departing from Norden Station (not Swanage), this immersive Halloween steam train ride is new for 2025 and brings a perfect mix of spooky fun, education, and nostalgia; all set against the stunning backdrop of the Purbeck countryside.
First Impressions
As soon as you arrive at Norden Station, you know you’re in for a treat. The station is fully dressed in Halloween decorations; think cobwebs, pumpkins, skeletons, and flickering lanterns , creating an atmospheric welcome for passengers of all ages.
The steam train itself is a sight to behold, complete with a giant spooky skull mounted on the front. As the whistle blows and the smoke billows, you’re transported into a world of ghostly adventure and old-world charm.
Onboard the Ghost Train
Every carriage is decorated with care, setting the mood for an unforgettable ride. But it’s not just about the décor; the live actors really bring the experience to life.
We were greeted by a mischievous witch and a mysterious pumpkin-headed character, both staying in full character throughout the journey. One of the highlights was the witch visiting each carriage to share spooky tales and haunted history from around the local area; blending genuine Dorset folklore with Halloween fun.
It was surprisingly educational, too! The kids were completely captivated, hanging on every word while giggling at the witch’s wicked laugh.
Every child received a Halloween activity sheet packed with themed word searches, colouring pages, and even a pumpkin stress toy which a lovely touch that made the experience interactive and engaging.
Stunning Scenery & Practical Perks
As the train rattles along, you’ll take in breathtaking views of the Purbeck countryside, with its rolling hills and autumnal colours adding to the magic of the ride.
The team at Swanage Railway have really thought of everything. There’s free parking at Norden Station, and a fantastic children’s play area to enjoy if you arrive early.
The staff were all incredibly friendly and enthusiastic, clearly loving being part of this new Halloween event. It’s a well-organised, family-friendly attraction that perfectly balances spooky with fun — ideal for kids and adults alike.
Final Thoughts
The Halloween Ghost Train Experience is a wonderful addition to Dorset’s Halloween calendar. It’s imaginative, immersive, and filled with thoughtful touches that make it stand out from other family events. It's not as polished at the Polar Express experience they had there - in a good way though; less expensive and feels more traditional.
Between the authentic steam train, live storytelling, and Halloween surprises, this is a ride you won’t forget in a hurry.
Perfect for families, train enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a Halloween experience with a difference.
