Exploring the Newly Reopened Scaplen’s Court and Garden at Poole Museum

After a three-year closure and a multi-million-pound transformation, Scaplen’s Court and Garden has finally reopened — and it’s even more stunning than before. To explore the exciting updates, our Business Writer, Emma Collins, visited Poole’s refurbished medieval gem and discovered how this historic site has been beautifully reimagined for locals and visitors alike.

If you’re planning your next adventure, be sure to check out our guide to things to do with kids in Dorset for more family-friendly places to explore nearby.

A Medieval Treasure with a Modern Twist

Tucked just off Poole Quay, Scaplen’s Court is the town’s most complete medieval building and one of Poole Museum’s most treasured heritage sites. Following an ambitious redevelopment of the Poole Museum Estate, Scaplen’s Court and its charming walled garden now combine history, art, coffee, and community in one inspiring destination.

From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a warm smile at the welcome desk, instantly making me feel at home. The entrance area is filled with fascinating information about Poole’s history, Scaplen’s Court, and the Poole Museum Project, alongside a donation stand for those who wish to support this much-loved local landmark.

The Old Town Salt Pig Café

Just beyond the entrance, you’ll find The Old Town Salt Pig Café, a bright and airy space run by the locally loved Salt Pig company. The menu celebrates Dorset’s best local ingredients — think fresh salads, homemade quiche, pasta, and tempting cakes and pastries, all served with barista-quality coffee and a range of soft drinks.

With its cosy indoor seating and peaceful outdoor courtyard, the café has already become a popular community hub in Poole Old Town, perfect for meeting friends or relaxing after exploring the exhibits. Find out more about the café here.

Stepping Back in Time

Exploring Scaplen’s Court feels like stepping back through the centuries. Each period room is filled with character, showcasing authentic features that tell the story of Poole’s past. The tranquil walled herb and physic garden is another highlight — a peaceful oasis that’s perfect for a quiet moment amid the bustle of the quay.

Accessibility has also been transformed. For the first time, visitors can now enjoy full access to Scaplen’s Court thanks to a new platform lift, ensuring everyone can experience Poole’s rich heritage.

Upstairs, I was surprised by the number of rooms available to hire for events, weddings, workshops, and corporate gatherings. The redevelopment has expanded capacity from 60 to over 250 guests, making Scaplen’s Court and Gardenone of Poole’s most unique venues for celebrations and community events.

A Timeless Dorset Experience

Growing up, Scaplen’s Court always felt like a special place. Now, after its incredible redevelopment, it’s even more inviting — offering more accessibility, more community spaces, and even more reasons to pop in for food, coffee, art, or simply a peaceful stroll through history. Scaplen’s Court makes a fantastic stop for family days out in Dorset, combining history, gardens, and hands-on learning experiences for all ages.

Best of all, Scaplen’s Court and Garden in Poole is now open all year round, welcoming locals and tourists to rediscover one of Dorset’s most enchanting heritage attractions.
