REVIEW: Mapperton House & Gardens – A Magical Day Out for All Ages

It's the school Summer Holidays so we're busy exploring! I took my two daughters (aged 7 and 4) on our very first visit to Mapperton House – and it turned out to be a real treat for all of us.

So often, family days out are geared solely around the kids, but Mapperton offered something really special for everyone. I had the chance to soak in the tranquillity and beauty of the stunning gardens and grounds, while the girls had an adventure of their own – one they described excitedly as “just like The Secret Garden,” which they’ve been watching recently.

This summer, Mapperton has a fantastic offer – kids go FREE as part of their Mapperton Wildlings programme, and it’s well worth taking advantage of. As a family, you can explore the House, Gardens, Wildlands and the Lost Village play area, which was a big hit with my little adventurers. It’s all very natural and outdoorsy, with plenty of space to roam, climb, and imagine.

We happened to visit during Arts Week, one of their themed summer weeks, and it couldn’t have been more perfect given the changeable weather. After enjoying the fresh air and exploring the estate, we were able to head indoors where the girls painted pebbles and decorated bunting. They were so proud to earn a Mapperton badge each for their creativity!

Of course, no outing is complete without a pit stop at the café – and Mapperton’s is absolutely charming. I enjoyed a delicious slice of courgette and walnut cake with a hot drink, while the girls tucked into gooey brownies and a summery strawberries and cream cake. It was the perfect end to a memorable day.

Practical perks like free parking, easy access, and those breathtaking views as you drive in make Mapperton even more appealing. Whether you're looking for a peaceful escape or an inspiring day of play and discovery with the kids, Mapperton offers something beautifully different from the usual.

Top Tips:

Top Tips for Visiting Mapperton with Kids:

  • Take advantage of the “Kids Go Free” offer – Mapperton Wildlings is running all summer, making it a great value day out.
  • Check the themed weeks in advance – From Arts Week to Wildlife Week, there's something different on each week of the holidays. Perfect for mixing indoor and outdoor fun.
  • Wear comfy shoes – The gardens and wild play areas are expansive and best enjoyed with a good wander.
  • Bring spare clothes or waterproofs – Especially if your little ones love climbing, exploring, and embracing the outdoors like mine do!
  • Pack a few snacks or drinks – Although the café is fantastic, it’s always handy to have something on hand while you’re out adventuring.
  • Don’t forget your phone/camera – The views across the valley and the gardens are truly stunning (plus plenty of cute photo ops in the play areas!).
  • Leave time for the café – The cakes are too good to miss
  • If you're coming from the BCP area it's about an hours drive, so it would be worth stopping off in the historic town of Dorchester on the way there or back to make a full day of it
