Symondsbury Estate Tree Trail Review: A Truly Memorable Family Day Out This Half Term
If you’re searching for a place to wow the whole family this Half Term,, Symondsbury Estate’s brand-new Tree Trail is an absolute hidden gem - and, the value is almost unbelievable.
Set beneath the iconic Colmer’s Hill near Bridport, Symondsbury Estate offers families the chance to experience some of Dorset’s most breathtaking countryside completely free of charge, including free parking, with the only cost being just £4 per child for the Tree Trail itself.
For that, children receive a trail pack, an interactive nature-based challenge, an educational outdoor adventure and even a prize at the end - making it one of the best value family activities in Dorset this May half term.

A Beautiful and Easy Family Day Out in Dorset
From the moment we arrived, the whole experience felt effortless and welcoming for families.
Parking is conveniently located right by the entrance, and before you even step out of the car, you’re greeted by incredible panoramic views across the Dorset countryside, with the instantly recognisable Colmer’s Hill standing proudly in the landscape.
The Visitor Centre itself is worth visiting alone. Far more than just a ticket desk, it’s a beautifully curated space filled with high-quality homeware, books, plants, gifts and deli treats. Everything feels thoughtful, stylish and in keeping with the estate’s natural charm.
Next door is the estate café - and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, with families, walkers and locals all gathering after exploring the grounds. We picked up takeaway coffees and some delicious cakes before heading off on our adventure.
Exploring the Symondsbury Estate Tree Trail
The new Tree Trail is such a wonderful concept for families because it combines outdoor adventure with learning in a way that feels genuinely exciting for children.
As you follow the trail around the estate, little explorers are encouraged to discover different species of trees, notice textures, shapes and details in nature, and complete an anagram challenge along the way.
What makes the experience so special is how varied the walk is. One moment you’re wandering through beautifully maintained estate grounds, the next you’re climbing countryside paths with sweeping sea views stretching across the Jurassic Coast.
The trail naturally encourages children to slow down, look around and connect with nature - spotting leaves, climbing hills, running through woodland paths and discovering hidden corners of the estate together.
Iit’s wholesome, educational and adventurous all at once.
Picnic Views from Colmer’s Hill
One of the highlights of our visit was taking our coffees and cakes up to Colmer’s Hill for a picnic.
The views from the top are simply spectacular and arguably among the best in Dorset. Rolling countryside, patchwork fields, distant sea views and the peaceful beauty of the surrounding landscape create one of those moments that genuinely stays with you.
It felt like the perfect Dorset family memory - sitting together in the sunshine with cake, surrounded by incredible scenery and watching the children explore freely outdoors.
Discovering the Magical Holloways
After our picnic, we continued our walk through the famous Holloways - ancient sunken pathways lined with lush greenery and twisting roots that feel almost magical to walk through.
These hidden trails add another completely different dimension to the day out and make the estate feel full of discovery and adventure around every corner.
Between the Holloways, countryside walks, sea views, woodland trails and Colmer’s Hill, the sheer diversity of landscapes at Symondsbury Estate is what makes it so unique.
A Real Dorset Memory Maker for Families
In a world where family days out can quickly become expensive, Symondsbury Estate feels incredibly refreshing.
Free access to such a magnificent estate, free parking, stunning facilities and an educational outdoor activity for just £4 per child makes this one of the best-value family experiences in Dorset right now.
More than anything though, it’s the feeling the day leaves you with.
Fresh air, beautiful scenery, children learning through adventure, coffee and cake with unforgettable views, wholesome family time and those simple shared moments that become lasting memories.
