Bournemouth Italian Restaurant Celebrates 32 Years in Winton
More than three decades after first opening its doors, Ristorante Barolo in Winton is marking a major milestone in Bournemouth’s hospitality scene.
The independent Italian restaurant, located on Wimborne Road, recently celebrated its 32nd anniversary, a significant achievement in an industry that has faced mounting pressures in recent years.
Owner Sam Barolo, 55, first took over the premises in December 1993, officially opening in 1994 after spending weeks cleaning and redecorating the space with the help of his wife and a close friend. At the time, the new venture launched between two well-established Italian restaurants, making it a bold move in an already competitive part of Bournemouth’s dining scene.
In 1994, Barolo started with just three people, Sam, his wife and his friend, sharing a simple dream to offer authentic Italian cuisine and heartfelt hospitality to the local community. Those early days were built on hard work, long hours and personal connection with every guest who walked through the door.
However, a focus on consistently high standards, authentic Italian cuisine and attentive service quickly helped the restaurant build a loyal following within the Winton community and beyond.
Expansion and Growth in Bournemouth
Just four years after opening, Ristorante Barolo underwent a significant expansion in 1998. Despite the transformation, the team maintained the same quality and consistency that had earned the restaurant its reputation.
A major milestone came in 1998 when they expanded the restaurant to around 120 seats, effectively doubling its size and in 2018, thry undertook a full refurbishment to modernise the space but remained true to their authentic Italian roots.
During this period, the restaurant became one of the busiest in the area, firmly establishing itself as a staple of Bournemouth’s independent food scene.
A Family Affair in the Heart of Winton
Today, the restaurant continues to thrive as a family-run business, with the next generation becoming increasingly involved in day-to-day operations.
Over three decades, Sam says the biggest reward has been the relationships formed with customers.
“Over the past 32 years we have witnessed enormous changes, from handwritten order pads and dial-up credit card machines to online bookings and mobile payments. The world has transformed around us,” he said.
“What has remained constant are our wonderful customers. We have had the privilege of serving multiple generations of the same families, parents who first visited us in the 90s now bringing their children and grandchildren. To see families return decade after decade is incredibly moving. It is a reminder that a restaurant is not just about food, but about memories and shared moments.”
That sense of continuity can even be found on the menu.
“One dish that truly tells the story of Barolo is our Meta-Meta from the fish section of the menu… a mixture of king prawns, mussels and squid sautéed in garlic, fresh chilli and white wine, finished in a rich tomato sauce,” Sam said.
“It was one of the very first dishes on our original menu in 1994 and 32 years later it remains there today. It has stood the test of time and continues to be one of the most popular choices.”
In an era where many long-standing hospitality venues have struggled to survive, reaching a 32-year milestone stands as a testament to resilience, adaptability and consistent quality.
For Bournemouth diners searching for authentic Italian cuisine in Winton, Ristorante Barolo remains one of the town’s longest-running and most established restaurants, a local success story built from the ground up.
