REVIEW: Monkey World Dorset

We last visited and reviewed Monkey World during the Easter Holidays in 2021 (during lockdown easing), so although it was wonderful to be able to do that at the time, our now 3 and 6 year olds are a perfect age to really make the most of it we decided to head back during the Easter Holidays.

The weather has been pretty dire and the forecast for our visit was very windy, so as everything is outdoors we were worried we wouldn't have the best experience, but it really is a fantastic all-weather activity. Monkey World is very sheltered so we didn't even notice the high winds until we left.

Why Monkey World Dorset is the perfect family day

When it comes to planning a family day out, Monkey World Dorset should be a priority. Located near Wareham, Monkey World offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. With its stunning natural surroundings and a wide variety of activities, this primate rescue centre is the perfect destination for an exciting and educational day out with the family.

Monkey World Dorset is not just your average zoo - it is a sanctuary that provides a safe haven for rescued monkeys and apes from all over the world. By visiting Monkey World, you not only get to witness these incredible creatures up close but also support their conservation efforts. It's a win-win situation!

One of the reasons why Monkey World is the perfect family day out is the wide range of activities and attractions it offers. From guided tours (which need to be pre-booked to guarantee availability, but there is a self-guided tour you can follow on your smartphone if you prefer to travel at your own pace), and feeding sessions to interactive experiences and educational talks and huge playgrounds for the kids and there is something for everyone.

Our kids were absolutely fascinated to witness the monkeys swinging from tree to tree, having 'lunch' and 'singing' to each other.

Highlights of Monkey World Dorset

The car park was pretty busy when we arrived, however, it didn't once feel too busy and we were easily able to get a good view of all the action.

We were very lucky as the Apes were very active and vocal during our visit (I think they must have been enjoying all the attention during the Easter Holidays) so the kids really got to experience Monkey World at its best and they were absolutely delighted to see them swinging around and their favourites were on a few separate occasions where they were carrying around their 'snuggle blankets'. The sight of these playful primates joyfully jumping from branch to branch is truly enchanting.

We really did get the full works seeing them play, sing, peeling, and eating onions, cauliflower, beetroot, and aubergines and my personal favourite was a Mum carrying around her tiny baby.

From orangutans to chimpanzees, you'll have the opportunity to see these intelligent creatures up close and personal. The Monkey World team is dedicated to providing them with a safe and nurturing environment, and their stories will touch your heart.

There are a couple of cafes serving hot and cold snacks, drinks and ice creams as well as plenty of picnic benches so you are also welcome to bring your own food too.

Things to do at Monkey World Dorset

There is no shortage of things to do at Monkey World Dorset. Start your day by joining a guided tour to get a comprehensive understanding of the sanctuary's mission and the different primate species they care for. The knowledgeable guides will provide fascinating insights into the lives of these incredible creatures.

There are 3 play areas at Monkey World including a huge brand new play area - The Great Ape Play Area at the far end of the park, past the capuchin complex.  With large climbing frames, cargo nets, swings and slides our kids enjoyed at least 45 minutes here alone. It's one of the best playgrounds we've visited in the Dorset area - and we've been to a lot!

Tips for visiting Monkey World Dorset during the School Holidays

We went during Easter so we pre-booked our tickets online (there's a 10% discount for online bookings) which was super easy and although there was a short queue on the entrance it took less than 5 minutes to get through.

It's also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, as you'll be doing a fair bit of walking. Monkey World is spread out over a fairly large area, with pretty much all of it outdoors so be prepared to explore the grounds at a leisurely pace.

Make sure you bring plenty of snacks - there are cafes but we were there for around 4 hours so the kids had a few snack breaks.

A buggy or carrier is advisable for babies and toddlers too. Ours are a bit older but still needed a carry.

To plan your visit to Monkey World Dorset, start by checking their website for the most up-to-date information on opening hours and ticket prices. It's a good idea to allow at least half a full day to explore the sanctuary and take part in the various activities on offer.

In conclusion, Monkey World Dorset is the perfect family day out during the Easter holidays. With its conservation efforts, incredible primate residents, and a wide range of activities, Monkey World provides a unique and educational experience for visitors of all ages. So, pack your bags, plan your visit, and get ready for a day of adventure and discovery at Monkey World Dorset.
