The Bournemouth-based artist will be creating a powerful new public artwork for this year’s festival, which runs from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th September.
What makes Bob’s story even more remarkable is that he only began working with sculpture six months ago. His piece for the festival, titled We Are Here, will feature a towering hand made from woven willow, rising from the earth as a symbol of welcome and unity. The sculpture will be built live during the festival, and visitors will even be able to step inside it, making it a truly interactive centrepiece.
As part of the Associate Artist Programme, Bob will also lead workshops inviting local people to get involved in shaping parts of the sculpture. This hands-on collaboration reflects the spirit of the festival that is one of creativity, connection and community.
“Working in willow sculpture is a new direction that’s felt immediate and necessary,” says Bob. “This opportunity to develop a piece with and for the community is transformative. It’s not just my hand – it’s everyone’s.”
Festival Director Andrea Francis added:
“Bob’s work speaks to the spirit of our local area – resourceful, grounded and imaginative. We're thrilled to showcase their talent and support them on this journey.”
Cllr Andy Martin from BCP Council praised the project for showcasing belonging, creativity and collective expression:
“Bob’s journey into sculpture beautifully embodies our festival’s theme, We Are Here. His work reminds us that art is for everyone.”
Bob’s sculpture will feature bright yellow details, symbolising creativity and illumination, and draw inspiration from Dorset’s rich heritage of weaving and folklore. The final design and title will be revealed soon.
Arts by the Sea is free to attend, and features a wide mix of performances, music, installations, dance, theatre and community events, all taking place in Bournemouth’s beautiful coastal setting. It’s made possible thanks to support from BCP Council and Arts Council England, with funding from taxpayers and National Lottery players.
