Visually Impaired Adventurers Take to the Water with Dorset Blind Association and Land & Wave
A group of Dorset Blind Association members enjoyed a truly unforgettable adventure this week, kayaking along the dramatic coastline from Studland Bay to Old Harry Rocks—supported by the fantastic team at local outdoor company Land & Wave.
The inclusive experience on Monday, 9 June paired six visually impaired participants with trained Land & Wave instructors, who acted as sighted guides in double sit-on-top kayaks. For some of the group, it was their first time taking part in a water sport, and the experience didn’t disappoint.
“Our members had an incredible day—many had never tried kayaking before, and to do so in such a beautiful setting with expert, supportive instructors was truly special,” said Sam Baker, Community Relations Officer at Dorset Blind Association. “We’re so grateful to Land & Wave for making adventure accessible and creating unforgettable memories.”
The group journeyed through calm seas and sunshine with instructors describing the scenery and landmarks along the way, including the towering chalk cliffs of Old Harry Rocks and the peaceful stretches of Studland Bay.
The Land & Wave team were not only highly trained but also incredibly friendly, encouraging and fun, bringing energy, laughter and reassurance throughout the whole afternoon. Their enthusiasm made the experience feel relaxed, inclusive and empowering for everyone involved.
This was the second collaboration between Dorset Blind Association and Land & Wave. In 2024, they worked together to take blind adventurer and BBC One Show presenter, Amar Latif, rock climbing at Dancing Ledge as part of a fundraising campaign for the charity.
“There were smiles, laughter and real connections being made out on the water,” added Rosie Tanner, Director at Land & Wave. “It was a reminder that the outdoors can—and should—be a space where everyone belongs.”
By providing bespoke adventures and training their team to act as guides, Land & Wave continues to advocate for equality, diversity, and accessibility in outdoor activities. The organisation is committed to developing their instructors' skillsets, ensuring that disabilities are not a barrier to enjoying nature and challenging oneself through adventure.
Building on the success of this event, Dorset Blind Association and Land & Wave are now exploring more exciting activities—on land and water—to give even more of our members the chance to challenge themselves and experience the great outdoors in safe, supportive and inspiring ways.
