The historic Dorset town is on the hunt for a new Town Crier, a ceremonial figurehead who plays a key role in civic life, community events and public celebrations. It’s an opportunity to become the proud voice of Shaftesbury, echoing a tradition that dates back centuries.
Mayor Cllr Virginia Edwyn-Jones said:
“This is a unique opportunity for someone who is passionate about Shaftesbury, confident in public, and keen to play a part in the civic traditions that bring our community together.
The Town Crier represents not just the voice of the town, but its spirit.”
The successful applicant will be expected to attend events throughout the year, opening festivities, supporting civic ceremonies, and delivering town announcements with the familiar call: “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!”
Each proclamation ends with the rousing: “God save the King; May Shaftesbury Flourish!”
While the role is honorary and unpaid, it comes with a £300 annual honorarium, covered expenses, a full ceremonial uniform, and membership to the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers.
Applicants should be confident, personable, and reliable, with a strong speaking voice and an interest in local heritage. Performance or public speaking experience is welcome but not essential.
Sound like your kind of spotlight? Applications are open and closes on Wednesday, 23 July. Visit www.shaftesbury-tc.gov.uk to find out more and apply.
