Minterne House: Must-Visit Gardens This Spring, Family Days Out and a Historic Dorset Estate to Explore
Spring brings a renewed sense of energy to Dorset's countryside, as gardens and historic estates emerge from winter.
One of the county's most anticipated seasonal destinations is Minterne House, home of the Churchill and Digby families since 1620, where beautiful gardens, heritage and landscape come together to create a visit that feels both timeless and restorative.
Set beneath the Dorset Downs near Cerne Abbas, Minterne has long been celebrated for its Himalayan gardens and historic house. Each year, from early spring onwards, the estate becomes a place people return to, drawn in by seasonal colour, open space and a slower pace of exploration.
A Must-Visit Garden in Dorset This Spring
Minterne's gardens are internationally recognised for their collection of Himalayan rhododendrons and azaleas, many of which reach their peak between March and May. Spring visitors are rewarded with sweeping colour across woodland paths, lakes and streams, alongside magnolias, cherries and spring bulbs emerging throughout the grounds.
The gardens cover approximately 27 acres and are designed to feel natural and immersive rather than formal. Paths wind through woodland, past waterfalls and reflective pools, encouraging visitors to explore at their own pace. As an RHS Partner Garden, Minterne holds a respected place within the UK's horticultural landscape, attracting both keen gardeners and those simply seeking to enjoy spring at its most atmospheric.
For 2026, the gardens are open from 1 February with daily opening hours from 10am to 5pm (last entry at 4pm).
Music at Minterne House
Music forms an important part of Minterne House’s programme of curated experiences, with Music at Minterne returning for its third year in 2026. Led by Artistic Director Guy Johnston, the concert series brings professional musicians and emerging talent into the historic setting of the house, offering audiences the chance to enjoy live classical music in an intimate and atmospheric environment.
In February 2026, Minterne will welcome two quartets from the Royal Academy of Music: the Neruda Quartet and the Kalla Quartet. Ahead of their performances, the musicians will receive coaching from violinists Marije Johnstonand Magnus Johnston, alongside cellist Guy Johnston.
The February concerts take place on:
- Tuesday 17 February 2026 at 6.00pm
An evening concert featuring works by Haydn, Beethoven and Debussy, followed by a buffet supper.
Ticket options include concert-only admission or an evening concert with supper.
- Wednesday 18 February 2026 at 12.00 noon
A lunchtime concert with a programme including works by Erwin Schulhoff and Felix Mendelssohn, followed by a light buffet lunch.
These performances offer a rare opportunity to experience Minterne House as a live music venue during the quieter early part of the year.
Further concerts are planned for May 2026, with a Gala Fundraising Concert on Saturday 9 May, featuring Guy Johnston alongside members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, performing works by Strauss and Brahms. This will be followed by a lunchtime concert on Sunday 10 May, with artists and programme to be confirmed.
A limited number of guests will also have the opportunity to stay at Minterne House during the May concert weekend, adding an additional layer to the experience for visitors wishing to extend their time at the estate.
Music at Minterne reflects the house’s role not only as a historic home and garden destination, but also as a cultural space where music, heritage and setting come together.
Mother's Day Afternoon Tea at Minterne House
For those looking to mark Mother's Day with something a little more special, Minterne House is hosting a dedicated Mother's Day Afternoon Tea on Sunday 15 March, beginning at 2pm. Served in the grand Trafalgar Hall, the experience offers a rare opportunity to step inside the historic house, which is not usually open to the public.
Guests will enjoy a traditional afternoon tea featuring freshly baked scones with Dorset clotted cream and jam, a selection of delicate finger sandwiches, and an assortment of handmade cakes and pastries. The afternoon will be accompanied by the gentle sound of a live pianist, adding to the relaxed and elegant atmosphere.
A curated selection of fine teas will be available, with the option to include a glass of champagne for those wishing to make the occasion extra special. Tickets also include complimentary access to the gardens, allowing guests to spend time exploring the Himalayan gardens and spring trails at leisure before or after tea.
Pre-booking is essential, with options available for adults and children, making it a thoughtful way to celebrate Mother's Day in a setting shaped by centuries of history and springtime beauty.
Family Days Out This Easter
Spring at Minterne is also a popular time for family visits, providing an opportunity for gentle walks through the gardens, time spent outdoors and moments of shared calm, often accompanied by cream teas and views across the estate.
Over Easter, families can explore the gardens as part of the annual Easter Trail, running from 28 March to 10 April 2026. Designed to encourage curiosity and exploration, the trail adds a playful element to a garden visit while leaving space for families to enjoy the wider landscape, picnic areas and woodland walks.
With dogs welcome on leads, free parking available, and plenty of open space for all ages to explore comfortably, Minterne lends itself to relaxed family days out that don't rely on fixed schedules or indoor attractions.
Experiences That Encourage Return Visits
Part of Minterne's appeal lies in its seasonal rhythm. Many visitors return at different times of year to see the gardens change, whether for spring blooms, summer shade or autumn colour. Gift vouchers and future garden visits provide a way to extend the experience beyond a single day, making Minterne a place people revisit rather than simply tick off.
As a setting for special occasions, reflection and connection with nature, the estate also remains quietly woven into Dorset's wedding and tourism landscape, valued for its scale, scenery and sense of occasion.
A Spring Destination Rooted in Nature and Heritage
Whether visited as a spring garden in bloom, a family day out over Easter, or a historic estate to explore across the year, Minterne House continues to hold a distinctive place in Dorset's countryside. Its combination of landscape, heritage and seasonal change makes it particularly compelling in spring, when colour returns and the pace of a visit naturally slows.
For those looking to experience Dorset in a way that feels grounded, restorative and connected to nature, Minterne remains one of the county's most enduring and quietly magical places to visit.
