The Priory in Wareham firmly falls into the second category.
Set beside the River Frome in the heart of historic Wareham, this luxury boutique hotel and restaurant have quietly created one of Dorset’s most idyllic spots for a long summer lunch, and after our recent visit, it’s easy to understand why.
From the moment we arrived, there was a feeling that this was more than simply going out for lunch. It felt escapist. The kind of place that instantly encourages you to slow down, settle in and forget about the to-do list for a few hours.
A Luxury Dorset Lunch Spot That Feels Like a Holiday
Our afternoon began in the beautifully cosy snug area for a relaxed work catch-up before we moved outside onto the terrace - and what a setting it is.
Blue skies, sunshine glistening on the river, elegant tables dressed for leisurely lunches and an atmosphere that somehow manages to feel both refined and completely relaxed at the same time.
The Priory has mastered that rare balance of luxury without pretension.
Soft music played in the background, guests lingered over chilled glasses of wine and there was an unmistakable sense that everyone had discovered somewhere rather special.
If you’re looking for a standout riverside restaurant in Dorset, a memorable lunch spot near Poole or Bournemouth, or somewhere special for a celebration, date or indulgent afternoon with friends, The Priory deserves a place firmly on your list.
Service That Gets Everything Right
One thing that stood out throughout our visit was the service.
The team were warm, attentive and effortlessly professional without ever feeling intrusive. Every detail felt considered, but never overdone.
Glasses were topped up naturally; dishes arrived with perfect timing and the whole experience flowed seamlessly from start to finish.
It’s the sort of hospitality that instantly helps you relax.
The Food: Refined, Seasonal and Beautifully Executed
We started, appropriately, with beautifully chilled glasses of Après Provence rosé - crisp, refreshing and exactly the kind of wine you want in hand on a warm Dorset afternoon. Light enough for lunch yet indulgent enough to feel like a treat, it perfectly set the tone for the experience ahead.
Then came complimentary homemade focaccia served warm with garlic butter, olive oil and balsamic.
And yes, even the bread was memorable. Soft, warm and dangerously moreish, it immediately set the tone for the quality that followed.
Starters
Each dish felt fresh, vibrant and beautifully presented, showcasing elevated flavours without overcomplicating things.
We enjoyed:
Every plate arriving at neighbouring tables looked equally impressive - one of those restaurants where you instantly suffer food envy no matter what you ordered.

Dessert Worth Staying For
By this point, we were already contemplating staying for another glass of rosé - but dessert sealed the deal.
The mango and passionfruit pavlova, served with mango and lime compote, struck the perfect balance between light and indulgent, while the fresh seasonal berries with Craig’s Farm Dairy pouring cream felt wonderfully simple and beautifully done, a reminder that quality ingredients often speak for themselves.
It was the perfect ending to an afternoon that somehow managed to feel luxurious without ever feeling formal.
And perhaps the biggest surprise of all? Considering the stunning setting, attentive service and genuinely high-end food offering, the pricing felt refreshingly reasonable.
You leave feeling like you’ve had a luxury experience without the intimidating price tag that often comes with premium dining.
The Kind of Place You Never Want to Leave
The biggest disappointment of the afternoon?
Having to leave.
School pick-up duties meant our lunch had to come to an end, but this is exactly the kind of place you could happily spend an entire afternoon.
Another glass of rosé. Dessert on the terrace. Maybe cocktails as the sun begins to dip over the river.
The Priory isn’t simply somewhere to eat, it’s somewhere to settle into.
