How to Spend the Perfect Summer Day in Dorset: Jurassic Coast Walks, a Great Pub & Fish and Chips on the Beach

Sometimes the best days out in Dorset are the ones you don’t plan.

We woke up on a sunny Saturday morning with no real itinerary. My daughter and I decided to pull on our walking shoes and head for the Jurassic Coast – and what started as a spontaneous walk turned into one of our favourite Dorset days of the summer.

A 10-mile hike with incredible coastal views. A stop at one of our favourite pubs in Dorset where we stumbled across live music, sea shanties and a brilliant atmosphere. Then an evening in Swanage with the rest of the family, fishing, sea swimming and eating fish and chips on the beach.

No expensive attraction tickets. No carefully planned schedule. Just a gorgeous, wholesome summer day making the most of some of the best things Dorset has to offer.

If you’re wondering how to spend a sunny day in Dorset, steal our itinerary!

Morning: Hike Along the Jurassic Coast From Chapman’s Pool

Our day started near Chapman’s Pool, one of the most beautiful spots on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

With the sun shining, my daughter and I set off along the coast in the direction of Kimmeridge.

And the views were incredible.

This stretch of the Dorset coast is one of those places that makes you stop every few minutes to take another photo. Rolling green countryside meets dramatic cliffs and the sea stretches out in front of you – on a clear summer’s day, it’s hard to beat.

We carried on until we'd walked around five miles before turning around and making our way back.

Our return took us back towards Chapman’s Pool before tackling the steps and heading up towards St Aldhelm’s Head and St Aldhelm’s Chapel.

By the time we made it back to the car we'd clocked up around 10 miles.

Definitely enough to earn a trip to the pub!

Can You Do a Shorter Chapman’s Pool Walk?

Absolutely – and you certainly don't need to walk 10 miles to enjoy this part of Dorset.

There are various walking options around Chapman’s Pool, Worth Matravers and St Aldhelm’s Head, so you can adapt your day depending on how far you want to walk and the abilities of your group.

If you're planning a longer hike, make sure you have suitable footwear, plenty of water and sun protection in warm weather.

The terrain can be steep and uneven in places and there are some significant climbs and descents, so this isn't somewhere we'd recommend setting off without checking your route first.

Always check the latest South West Coast Path information, weather forecast and any local path diversions or closures before heading out.

Don't Miss St Aldhelm’s Head and Chapel

One of the highlights of this part of the Jurassic Coast is St Aldhelm’s Head.

Sitting high above the coast is the tiny historic St Aldhelm’s Chapel, making it a brilliant point to incorporate into a walk around this area.

The climb certainly gets the legs working, but you're rewarded with spectacular coastal scenery.

It's also one of those wonderfully atmospheric Dorset locations that feels a million miles away from everyday life.

Coffee and Cake at Worth Matravers Tea & Supper Room

Before heading to The Square & Compass, we stumbled across another gorgeous little Worth Matravers gem – the Worth Matravers Tea & Supper Room, right by the village duck pond.

It was the perfect place to stop for a coffee and some much-needed refreshments after our walk. There’s a lovely little hatch for ordering drinks, but make sure you have a proper look around too. Inside you'll find a charming tearoom and shop, while out the back there’s a beautiful cottage garden that's perfect for sitting out on a sunny Dorset day.

And then there are the cakes! There was a seriously tempting selection, alongside local produce, making it exactly the sort of independent Dorset place we love discovering and supporting.

If you're walking around Chapman’s Pool, St Aldhelm’s Head or Worth Matravers, we'd definitely recommend building in a stop here for coffee and cake before continuing through the village.

Just make sure you still leave room for the pub afterwards!

Afternoon: The Square & Compass at Worth Matravers

After around 10 miles of walking, our next stop was an easy decision.

We met up with my husband, our other daughter and some friends.

It's one of our favourite pubs in Dorset and exactly the sort of place you want to arrive at after a long coastal walk.

We hadn't checked what was happening that day, so we couldn't believe our luck when we arrived to find a fantastic atmosphere with live music, sea shanties and a barbecue.

It was absolutely buzzing.

Sitting outside with a drink, listening to music after spending the morning walking along the Jurassic Coast was pretty hard to beat.

It's worth checking The Square & Compass's latest events and opening information before you visit, but even without an event taking place, it's a brilliant stop to combine with a walk around Worth Matravers and the surrounding coast.

Evening: Head to Swanage

We could have headed home after the pub, but the sun was still shining – so why waste it?

We headed into Swanage which is just a few miles away to squeeze a little more out of the day.

We made our way towards Peveril Point and spent some time fishing before going for a sea swim at one of our favourite spots.

We're keeping the exact swimming spot to ourselves!

After a long hike followed by an afternoon in the sunshine, getting into the sea was absolute bliss.

If you're planning your own swim, choose an appropriate location for your ability and always check local sea conditions, tides and safety information first.

Finish With Fish and Chips on the Beach

There was really only one way this particular Dorset day could end.

Fish and chips on the beach.

After walking, live music, fishing and swimming, we grabbed fish and chips and ate them together by the sea.

Nothing fancy.

But absolutely perfect.

And that's probably what we loved most about the whole day - it was all so simple and wholesome!

A Brilliant Low-Cost Day Out in Dorset

Days out with the family can get expensive, particularly during the school summer holidays, but this was a lovely reminder that some of Dorset's best experiences don't require an admission ticket.

The walking.

Those Jurassic Coast views.

Exploring the coast.

Spending time by the sea.

Swimming.

Watching the sun start to drop over another gorgeous Dorset day.

You'll obviously need to factor in costs such as parking, food and drinks, but you can easily adapt the itinerary to your budget – take a picnic, shorten the route or simply spend the evening on the beach.

Sometimes the simplest days are the ones you remember most.

FAQs: Planning a Summer Day Out in Dorset

What are some of the best things to do in Dorset on a sunny day?
Walking the Jurassic Coast, visiting Dorset's beaches, exploring coastal villages, sea swimming and enjoying food by the coast are all brilliant options. The area around Chapman’s Pool, Worth Matravers and Swanage makes it possible to combine several of these into one day.

Is this a free day out in Dorset?
Many of the experiences in this itinerary – including walking and spending time by the sea – don't require an attraction ticket. However, you'll need to budget for things such as parking, food and drinks, so we describe it as a low-cost rather than completely free day out.

How long was the Chapman’s Pool walk?
Our walk was approximately 10 miles and took us along the Jurassic Coast towards Kimmeridge before returning via the Chapman’s Pool and St Aldhelm’s Head area. You can choose a much shorter route if you don't want to walk as far. There is a circular from the carpark to St Aldhelm's head and back which is approx. 3-4 miles and you get to experience the 'Chapman's Pool Steps - 401 steps!' which is a fantastic achievement with breathtaking views as the reward.

Is the Chapman’s Pool area suitable for children?
That depends on your children's age, experience and walking ability. Parts of the coast are steep and uneven and our 10-mile route would not suit every family. Plan an appropriate route in advance and supervise children carefully around coastal terrain. Our 8 year old was fine and we've been doing the Chapman's Pool steps with them since they were 3 - but you may wany to pack some sweets for energy and motivation!

What can you combine with a visit to Chapman’s Pool?
Worth Matravers, St Aldhelm’s Head, The Square & Compass and Swanage can all form part of a wider day exploring this area of Dorset.

What can families do in Swanage in the evening?
A summer evening in Swanage can be as simple as walking along the seafront, visiting the beach, exploring the coastline, having fish and chips or spending some time by the sea.
