Your Total Guide To lifestyle

Open now until October 2026, this fascinating exhibition uncovers the story of a community shaped by ambition, reinvention, and the enduring influence of Highcliffe Castle.
In 1773, Lord Bute made his mark on the landscape by building his striking cliff-top residence, High Cliff. At the time, the surrounding area bore the rather unglamorous name of Slop Pond - a quiet hamlet far removed from today’s bustling coastal destination. Determined to establish a distinct identity, residents successfully campaigned for change - and so Highcliffe was born, taking its name from the grand mansion that overlooked the village.
At the heart of this transformation stands Highcliffe Castle itself. Once set within a vast 175-acre estate, much of this land now forms the town’s streets, homes, and community spaces. Over the years, the Castle and its residents played a pivotal role in shaping local life - donating land for key landmarks such as Highcliffe St Mark’s Church and selling parcels to support both wartime needs and the expansion of housing.
The exhibition features historic photographs, archive film footage, and local collectables, offering a captivating glimpse into Highcliffe's past. Visitors can compare familiar scenes with images of the village decades ago, watch rare footage of life along the beach, and explore objects connected to the area's history. Richly illustrated with stories, memories, and fascinating local insights, the exhibition reveals how the town has evolved over time and celebrates the people who helped shape the Highcliffe we know today.
The exhibition has been curated by staff and volunteers at Highcliffe Castle.
Cllr Andy Martin, Portfolio Holder for Customer, Communications and Culture and Ward Councillor for Highcliffe and Walkford, said: "This exhibition offers a fascinating insight into how Highcliffe has evolved over the centuries, from its origins as ‘Slop Pond’ to the thriving coastal community we know today. It highlights the important role Highcliffe Castle has played in shaping the area’s identity and celebrates the people, places and stories that have contributed to its development.
“I’d encourage residents and visitors alike to explore this unique exhibition and discover more about the rich heritage that makes Highcliffe such a special place."
Visitor Engagement and Experience Officer, Alexandra Allen-Smith said: “We are excited to share the stories of Highcliffe Village with our visitors. The Castle has a history of working with the community and this exhibition has reflected that with artifacts and props loaned by St Mark’s Church and Naish Farm Archives. Their contributions have helped us curate a fascinating glimpse into Highcliffe’s past.”
