Implementing a Visitor Charge: A Strategy to Revitalise Towns

About 70 businesses are expected to implement a visitor charge of around £2 per night, akin to charges in Europe and the USA, thereby establishing an Accommodation BID (ABID).

Plans are underway to introduce a new charge for visitors staying in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole, aiming to generate approximately £2 million annually for the area.

Andy Lennox, Chair of DMB, stated: "The ABID is a unique proposition for our three towns, and its swift implementation is one of the most important opportunities for our local business community now and in the future. Its successful delivery will have a lasting impact on the conurbation."

The hotel and tourism industry in the region sees this initiative as crucial to securing and developing the area's status as a leading national destination. The plans have been formulated by a shadow board comprising representatives from the hotel sector, the BH Area Hospitality Association (BAHA), the Destination Management Board (DMB), the four existing BIDs, and BCP Council.

Rosie Radwell, chair of the Shadow Board remarked: “The accommodation BID is essential for the promotion of our areas. The 3 towns have a huge amount of hoteliers all of which have a passion to see the area reach its potential and be a premier destination. We hope that with this levy and the events and marketing we can attract and bring will, in turn, bring more companies willing to invest in our stunning area.”

Councillor Vikki Slade, leader of BCP Council said: “We as a council welcome the industry’s pro-active approach and are excited at the prospect of working in partnership with the proposed new Accommodation BID, to deliver a more productive and resilient visitor economy and destination management.”

“As the council moves to a new way of working, as an enabler rather than deliverer. We will do everything within our power to help the process to a successful conclusion.”

In April 2024, there will be a ballot among approximately 70 accommodation providers to facilitate the introduction of ABID.
