A Hidden Gem on the Dorset Doorstep: Longham Lakes
Tucked away near Ferndown and just a short distance from Bournemouth Airport, Longham Lakes is the kind of place that rewards those who find it.
Two peaceful lakes, two miles of well-maintained gravel paths, and a surprising amount of wildlife for somewhere so close to home.
It's popular with dog walkers, anglers, birdwatchers, and model boat enthusiasts - and it's easy to see why. The paths are firm, level, and accessible, making it a comfortable walk for most visitors. Dogs are welcome too, though leads are required to protect the wildlife and keep them out of the water.
The lakes themselves serve different purposes. Lake One is reserved for fishing, and Longham has earned a strong reputation as one of Dorset's top coarse fisheries, with pike, bream, and carp among the regular catches. Lake Two is the domain of the local canoe club and model yacht sailors. Over 147 bird species have been recorded at the site, and in summer the banks fill with rushes, reeds, and wildflowers.
If you've not visited before, the upcoming Open Day is a good excuse to go. Running from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 30th May, the day includes watersports, nature activities, and crafts from Mindful Moments. Food will be provided by Pizza with Love and Cherry Ices. Entry and parking is free, and the car park gates open at 10.30am.
For those who want to get more involved, a volunteer group meets at the Longham Study Centre every Wednesday morning from 9am, taking on everything from habitat maintenance to activity days. The Study Centre itself is available for community hire, with a focus on education and conservation - call 01202 581411 for bookings.
