The Priory Wareham Celebrates MICHELIN Key Recognition in Landmark 50th Year

One of Dorset’s best-known country house hotels has received international recognition from the MICHELIN Guide, with The Priory Wareham awarded a coveted MICHELIN Key.

Sitting in a beautiful riverside position on the banks of the River Frome, the family-run hotel has been awarded One MICHELIN Key as part of the MICHELIN Guide’s 2026 hotel selection.

The accolade is particularly special for The Priory as it comes during a landmark year for the hotel, with the family behind it celebrating 50 years at the property.

What is a MICHELIN Key?

While food lovers will be familiar with the MICHELIN Star, the MICHELIN Key recognises exceptional hotels and places to stay.

Hotels can receive One, Two or Three Keys, with properties assessed anonymously by MICHELIN Guide Inspectors.

The assessment looks beyond luxury alone, considering everything from architecture and interior design to the consistency of service, character, value for money and how a hotel contributes to its surrounding area.

Receiving One MICHELIN Key marks The Priory out as somewhere offering a particularly memorable stay, with its own distinctive personality and experience.

A Dorset hotel with 50 years of family history

The recognition feels especially fitting for a property so closely connected with its location.

Found on the edge of historic Wareham on the site of a former priory, the main house dates back to the 16th century.

Today, The Priory has just 17 individually designed rooms and suites across the main house and its riverside Boathouse, combining antiques and historic character with contemporary touches.

Outside, four acres of quintessentially English gardens stretch towards the River Frome, creating the peaceful waterside setting for which the hotel has become known.

The Priory has been owned by the same family since 1976, making 2026 its 50th anniversary year.
Jeremy Merchant, Managing Partner at The Priory Wareham, said:

“We are delighted and very proud to receive a MICHELIN Key. For 50 years our family has cared for this house, its gardens and the guests who stay with us, and this recognition belongs to every member of the team who has made that possible.

“We hope it brings even more visitors to Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck as a benefit to the whole community.”

Putting Wareham and Purbeck on the map

For us, that's one of the most exciting aspects of the award.

Recognition on this scale isn't just brilliant news for The Priory; it helps shine another spotlight on Wareham, Purbeck and Dorset as a destination for exceptional places to eat, stay and visit.

The hotel's Garden Room restaurant is another major part of the experience. Overlooking the gardens and River Frome through floor-to-ceiling windows, it serves provenance-led menus focused on quality produce under Head Chef Stephan Guinebault.

The MICHELIN Key is also the latest in a series of accolades for The Priory, which was named Best Hotel in the Southwest in the Good Hotel Guide's 2026 César Awards.

A huge congratulations to the entire team at The Priory Wareham – and a fantastic achievement to celebrate during such an important anniversary year.
