Red Funnel Makes Exploring the Isle of Wight Easier Than Ever This Spring
For more than 160 years, Red Funnel has connected Southampton with the Isle of Wight, carrying passengers across the Solent since 1861.
While the paddle steamers may be long gone, the journey today is quicker than ever, with Red Jet crossings taking just 28 minutes and vehicle ferries around an hour.
And with the Isle of Wight now recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it's never been easier to swap the mainland for dramatic coastline, walking trails and seaside towns in under half an hour.
For foot passengers, day returns start from £14 for adults and £7 for children, while vehicle ferry crossings are available from £32.25 each way. With more than 35 crossings daily and flexible ticket options available, it's a simple way to plan anything from a spontaneous day trip to a longer coastal escape.
The island's events calendar is especially busy throughout May. The Isle of Wight Walking Festival is currently underway, bringing together more than 80 guided walks across the coastline, countryside and downs. Routes include the Tennyson Trail along the island's western ridge, with sweeping views towards The Needles, and coastal walks above Ventnor, where the town's unique microclimate allows subtropical plants to thrive at Ventnor Botanic Garden.
Elsewhere, Cowes Fringe returns from 22–24 May with theatre, comedy, live music and family workshops across one of the island's best-known sailing towns. The same Bank Holiday weekend also sees the return of Ticket to Ryde, a free seafront festival packed with entertainment and family activities, while car enthusiasts can head to The Isle of Wight Takeover on 17 May at the Royal County Show Ground.
Beyond the events, the Isle of Wight offers more than 25 beaches, over 50 attractions and hundreds of miles of walking and cycling routes. At just 23 miles across at its widest point, it's possible to explore beaches, countryside and coastal towns all in a single trip.
For those planning a longer stay, Red Funnel also offers combined ferry and accommodation bookings across hotels, cottages, campsites and holiday parks, with savings of up to 25% on ferry travel when booked together.
Part of the appeal is the crossing itself. Leaving Southampton Water behind as the Island slowly comes into view, the journey feels like the start of a proper change of pace before you arrive.
