Sophie's Ceramics to Bring Pottery Painting to Wimborne
Wimborne is getting its own pottery cafe, with Sophie's Ceramics set to open a third Dorset branch in town this summer.
The news comes straight from founder Sophie Perks, who has made no secret of how long she's wanted to bring the pottery painting cafe to Wimborne. Sharing the news on Facebook, she describes it as a dream she has believed in and felt drawn to for years, and admits she's been struggling to keep the secret from regulars who've popped in recently. The plan is to open in time for the summer holidays, with the team working behind the scenes to get the space looking cosy, bright and unmistakably Sophie's.
For anyone who hasn't been, the idea is simple and genuinely relaxing. You pick a piece to paint, anything from mugs and plates to penguins, sharks and fairies, then settle in at a table laid out with everything you need and decorate it however you like. A £3 studio fee per painter covers the paints, tools and firing, and you can paint as many pieces as you fancy for that, with individual items priced between £12 and £40. Once you're done, the team glaze and fire your work and text you when it's ready, usually within 10 to 14 days. There's a proper food and drink menu too, including dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan options, and the whole thing is pitched at all ages and abilities, no artistic confidence required.
Sophie sais; "When we opened our first Sophie’s Ceramics studio, our aim was simple: to create a welcoming, creative space where people of all ages could slow down, spend quality time together, and make lasting memories. Since then, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to grow a wonderful community across Dorset, and the response has honestly exceeded anything we ever imagined.
Wimborne felt like a natural next step for us. We have welcomed so many customers from Wimborne to our existing studios over the years, and we have been asked countless times whether we would ever open closer to them. When the opportunity arose, we knew it was the right fit.
The new studio will offer the same pottery painting experience our customers know and love, alongside children’s parties, baby prints, special events, workshops, and our café offering. We are incredibly excited to become part of the Wimborne community and to create a space where families, friends and individuals can come together, get creative and make memories."
This time, Sophie won't be doing it alone. Her partner Charlie is coming along for the ride, having heard about Sophie's Ceramics most days for the last four years. She jokes that the name is staying put, despite his involvement, so Charlie's Ceramics is off the table.
The Wimborne branch will be based on East Street, joining the existing cafes in Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury, both of which have built loyal followings for everything from quiet afternoon painting to themed events and workshops. An exact opening date is still to be confirmed, beyond the summer holidays target.
