The timing could hardly be better. It's five decades since a group of volunteers first set about restoring the branch line in 1976, rebuilding it piece by piece into one of the country's leading heritage railways. Becoming a charity, the railway says, is a fitting tribute to everyone who has played a part in that story, and a way to help secure the next 50 years.
The move reflects what Swanage Railway has grown into, which is far more than a train ride. Alongside running its heritage services, it delivers education programmes for schools and community groups, offers volunteering to hundreds of people, and contributes to the economy across Purbeck and Dorset. Charitable status brings all of that together under a single organisation and, importantly, opens the door to grant funding and charitable support the railway couldn't access before.
In a statement, chief executive Abbie King described it as a historic day and a tribute to the generations of volunteers and supporters who have sustained the line, adding that the focus now turns firmly to the future. Chair Ben Ford called it a transformational moment, one that reflects the railway's national reputation as a heritage, education and community organisation.
For a line rebuilt by enthusiasts and kept running by volunteers, it's a proud moment, and a solid footing for whatever the next half-century brings.
